Mbeki snubs Tsvangirai

Herald Reporters

SOUTH AFRICAN President Thabo Mbeki snubbed attempts by MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai to meet him outside the framework of the inter-party dialogue last week as it emerged that the opposition party was now pushing for more talks.

After the opening of Parliament in Harare on Tuesday, President Mugabe sent a clear message that the formation of a Government without MDC-T was imminent.

This has triggered panic among MDC-T ranks who are now trying to push President Mbeki to resuscitate the talks.

Zanu-PF, however, insisted yesterday that there were no more talks since there was a deal already on the table awaiting Tsvangirai’s assent.

Reports from South Africa say Tsvangirai, who has been hopping from one regional country to another since refusing to sign a political pact at the Sadc summit last week, failed to meet President Mbeki as he had breached protocol.

The Citizen newspaper of South Africa on Tuesday reported that President Mbeki turned down Tsvangirai’s request and ordered him to follow protocol.

Quoting a government source, the paper said Tsvangirai was told that he could not "just meet the president whenever you like".

"We must follow protocol and respect our president," the source was quoted as saying.

President Mbeki’s spokesperson, Mr Mukoni Ratshitanga, dismissed a statement by MDC-T spokesperson George Sibotshiwe that President Mbeki was due to fly to Harare to resuscitate the talks.

"These reports are absolutely baseless, he is definitely not going today (yesterday)," Ratshitanga said in an interview with The Citizen.

He said if President Mbeki was coming to Zimbabwe, an announcement would be made at an appropriate time.

Yesterday Zanu-PF principal negotiator Cde Patrick Chinamasa said there was no need for more talks since there was a deal already on the table that was waiting to be signed.

But MDC-T secretary-general Tendai Biti said President Mbeki should reconvene the talks. "We have to reach a solution. I hope the Sadc facilitator will, as a matter of urgency, reconvene talks,’’ he said. But Cde Chinamasa insisted: "I am not aware of the resumption of talks in South Africa. In fact, the agreement is on the table and we are waiting to know when the deal would be signed."

MDC-T spokesman Nelson Chamisa said: "Our president and the party have never sought to engage (President) Mbeki outside the parameters of the negotiations."

He, however, noted that there was need to put the country and the people first than merely seeking political power

I viewed the full story
Guess things always have to get worse before things can become better,Yes I viewed the whole story told without westernised BS by ABC news,on my pc.One up 4 the ABC news team.At least they are telling things as they really are, sadly not many westerners watch the ABC news.either on TV,a few as myself do subscribe to them online because they get 2 have a point of view this way.I can inform you that many westerners whom viewed this story by the ABC News team, were all in favour 4 your side,Most commented on how President Mbeki is only making himself look like a bigger fool than he already is.Thanks again for the updated post,Very important to stay together when one has a true understanding, perhaps you could ask some of your western friends if they have thought of subscribing to the online ABC News,it's free, and it is much more than just news.but the news they report is as accurite as your posting and update.Your supportive friend Shiara:)
